2017-18

This year, in response to feedback from colleagues, we have expanded the possible options for teacher research.

Action Research remains a potential route for undertaking research and development but there now exist a range of other options. The list is as follows:

  • Action Research: colleagues may choose to undertake individual pedagogy-based research linked to their own practice in the classroom. The final 'report' may take a variety of forms to be negotiated with Jon Nicholls.
  • Action Research with support from the Expansive Education Network with sessions held at the Institute of Education (co-ordinated by Jon Nicholls): 6 colleagues can opt to attend 3 workshop sessions at the IoE which will provide a supportive framework for learning how to employ action research in the classroom. This option would suit colleagues new to the school and/or the action research methodolgy.
  • School Priority Group Research: This involves colleagues working collaboratively to develop research on a theme from a list of whole school priorities. Each group leader will coordinate the work of the group. Each member of staff would undertake a specific piece of research, reporting back to the group, the results of which would be collated at the end of the year. (Overseen by Jon Curtis-Brignell)
  • Practice-Based Research: This gives colleagues an opportunity to develop their practice in a particular discipline. The results of their research would be an artefact, performance or event E.g. a collection of poetry, an exhibition of visual art/design, a piece of choreography/music etc. Proposals will be negotiated with Jon Nicholls.
  • Lesson Study: This is a form of classroom enquiry in which 2 or 3 teachers collaboratively plan, teach, observe, revise and share the results of a single class lesson. (Co-ordinated by Jon Curtis-Brignell)
  • RGTSA Facilitated Action Research: Up to 4 spaces are available for colleagues to do an action research project supported by the University of Greenwich. (Co-ordinated by Jon Curtis-Brignell)
  • Distance Learning Research: Colleagues may opt to undertake a piece of study/research supported by materials supplied online E.g. a MOOC (Proposals should be submitted to Jon Nicholls or Jon Curtis-Brignell)
  • Finally, colleagues may opt to propose an alternative project to the above which is linked to whole school priorities. These will be moderated by Jon Curtis-Brignell.
N.B. NQTs may opt into this process but it is not compulsory for them. NQTs are required to complete a separate programme of reflection as part of their induction.

Deadline:

The deadline for completion of individual reports (in whatever format) this year is: FRIDAY 6th JULY 2018. This will enable: group leaders to collate the findings of their group members; all research reports to be reviewed and published on the school website.

Research Resources:

In addition to the resources previously available on the Action Research page of this site, the following collection of Teaching & Learning Research documents might prove useful:

TEACHING & LEARNING RESEARCH SUMMARIES

Report Resources:

Colleagues can decide to use the following templates for creating their individual reports or negotiate a different format with either Jon Curtis-Brignell or Jon Nicholls. A guideline length for written reports is 1500 words.
